    Controls

  • Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, Volume
  • Valves

  • 3 x ECC83 (JJ), 4 x EL84 (TAD), solid state rectification
  • Characteristics

  • Optimised for a 'warm' clean sound, not much pre-amp overdrive, very low background noise, Middle control is 'independent' of Treble and Bass, 8 Ohm and 16 Ohm speaker outputs, UK mains input
  • Technical

  • Parallel triode input stage is followed by the Middle and Gain controls, second stage is again parallel triode (giving a warm tone and reduced background noise), long tailed pair phase inverter, push-pull output stage (independent non-bypassed cathode-bias on push and pull sides), solid state rectification (to allow a large reservoir capacitor to further reduce background noise and hum).
  • Applications

  • A very warm-sounding amplifier with good clean headroom, particularly suitable for Jazz or Blues. Low background noise makes it very suitable for recording. The relatively low gain and pedal-friendly input stage also makes this a great amplifier to use with a pedal board for other musical styles.

    Controls

  • Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, Volume
  • Valves

  • 3 x ECC83 (TAD, Tung-Sol and JJ), 4 x EL84 (JJ), solid state rectification
  • Characteristics

  • Optimised for a 'bright' clean sound, some pre-amp overdrive available, low background noise, 8 Ohm and 16 Ohm speaker outputs, UK mains input
  • Technical

  • A parallel triode input stage is followed by Treble, Middle, Bass and Gain controls. The second stage is a cooler biased triode. The AC signal load on the second stage is relatively high and also introduces significant treble boost. The third pre-amp stage is cool-biased and non-bypassed. Following the Master Volume control, the long-tailed-pair phase-inverter drives a push-pull output stage (with independent non-bypassed cathode bias on push and pull sides). Solid state rectification is used to permit a large reservoir capacitor for reduced background noise and hum.
  • Applications

  • The amplifier has a sparkling treble response. The power stage can be progressively over-driven and then has all the characteristics expected of a quartet of cathode-biased EL84 valves without global negative feedback. The three stage pre-amp provides useful over-driven tones (particularly with hum-bucking or P90 pick-ups) that can be accessed at low power levels by means of the master volume control. Some of the best distortion sounds result from a combination of pre-amp and power-amp over-drive. Low background noise makes the amplifier suitable for recording. The pedal-friendly input stage also makes this a great amplifier to use with pedals. In particular, a boost pedal can be used at the input to further over-drive the preamp stages if more distortion is required.
